Animal activist petitions Thai government to help starving elephants

BANGKOK: Susan Field, a British citizen residing in Koh Samui, today presented a petition with almost 65,000 signatures to the Thai Government today asking them to provide urgent financial aid for elephants and their handlers who have received no income since tourists disappeared at the start of COVID-19. “The future for elephants in Thailand looks extremely grim. In order to make a few baht, the mahouts may take their elephants back to begging in the streets or other cruel and degrading activities,” said Field, adding “Do these magnificent animals, your national symbol, deserve this? Phuket tourism representatives announce projects to revive the industry

PHUKET: A tourism press conference titled ‘Finally We Meet Again!’ was held yesterday (June 9) at the Jungceylon Shopping Mall on the first day of Phuket’s beaches re-opening, since all beaches across the island had been locked down with regards to the COVID-19 situation. Aquaria Phuket is now open at Central Floresta

Thailand Tourism Confidence Index holding steady in 2019

BANGKOK: The quarterly Thailand Tourism Confidence Index of 600 tourism operators was steady at 100 in the second quarter of 2019 and stood at 100 as predicted in the previous quarter. The projection of the Thailand Tourism Confidence Index for the third quarter of 2019 is also set at 100. The survey is a collaboration between the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT) and Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Economics and divided into six parts. These include an overview of Thai tourism, confidence index of tourism operators, testimonials from domestic and international tourists, tourism situation during key festivals, international tourist arrival projections, and recommendations for future action. New Visa prepaid tourist card on the way

BANGKOK: Siam Commercial Bank (SCB), The Mall Group, and Visa – with support from the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) – have announced the launch of a new SCB M Visa prepaid tourist card for foreign tourists who can use it for cashless travel and shopping when in Thailand. Off-the-beaten-track destinations in Thailand experiencing explosive Airbnb growth

PHUKET: New data released today highlights how the Airbnb community is helping grow tourism in off-the-beaten-track destinations across Thailand and the Asia Pacific, and helping spread the benefits of tourism beyond big cities and major tourism hotspots. Off-the-beaten-track destinations in Thailand grew by 53% year-on-year, with some areas like Rawai growing by more than 92% year-on-year. Airbnb hosts outside of big cities and major tourist destinations in APAC earned nearly US$1bn through the Airbnb platform in 2018. 12 million guests checked into Airbnb listings in these destinations in 2018, growing 70% year-over-year.
